Academics & Tutoring

There is instruction available in all subject areas.  Emphasis is on subject mastery.  There is instruction in the basic academics of reading, math and writing as well as the humanities and sciences.  We work with students from kindergarten through college.  



  • Developing sight vocabulary.

  • Developing phonic skills and phonemic awareness.  This is important for word attack skills in reading and spelling.

  • Developing symbol imagery which is the ability to visualize a sequence of letters.  This is important for sight vocabulary and spelling.

  • Developing Visualization, which is the ability to make mental pictures as you read.  This is important for understanding and remembering what is read.

  • Reading Comprehension - reading for factual detail, main idea, drawing inferences, recalling the sequence of story, and using the context to understand the meaning of a word.

  • Summarizing a paragraph, a chapter, and a story

  • Reading fluency

  • Vocabulary development



  • Automatic mastery of math facts in addition, subtraction, multiplication and division

  • Math processes and concepts appropriate for grade level - place value, addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of whole numbers, fractions, decimals and percentages, Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, Calculus.

  • Word Problems

  • Logic Puzzles

  • Numerical reasoning

  • Spatial Organization - setting up problems



  • The mechanics of writing and cursive - spacing, slant, regularity and uniformity of letter size

  • Development of a paragraph with a topic sentence, supporting details and conclusion

  • Development of a 5 paragraph essay with an introduction, supporting paragraphs and conclusion

  • Research papers

At a readiness level, many games and manipulative activities are used to engage the child and make learning fun.


Reading Readiness
  • Letter names and sounds

  • Blending sounds together to form a word

  • Sight vocabulary

  • Left to right reading

  • Rhyming

  • Identifying first, last, and middle sound

  • Reading phonic readers and books with a pre-primer and primer level vocabulary

Math Readiness
  • Seriation - the ability to arrange a series from smallest to largest underlies an understanding of counting as being +1

  • Conservation - the ability to recognize a number independent of what is being counted or how much space is being taken up

  • +1 as the number after; -1 as the number before

Writing Readiness
  • Exercises for hand strength and dexterity, including cutting and pasting

  • Pencil grip

  • Letter formation

  • Simple words

  • Simple sentences

Cognitive and Perceptual Readiness
  • Discrimination between words and letters with minimal differences such as b/d; was/saw
